By Sunanda Dhanna Ben Parag, a South Richmond Hill resident in New York city has proven to the world that IndoCaribbean artists are not only talented but also very sophisticated. A truly dedicated and passionate individual, Ben’s life thus far revolves around his immense love for music. The fruition of Ben's sacrifices came in 2017 when he made history by smashing his way into the top 10 finalists on the Hit TV show Dil Hai Hindustani produced by famous actor/producer/director Karan Johar. Other celebrity judges on the show included musician/Rapper Aditya Prateek Singh Sisodia popularly called Badshah, Singer/Composer Shekhar Ravjiani and Playback Singer Shalmali Kholgade. After Ben’s triumphant audition for Dil Hai Hindustani, the youngster continued to reduce the judges to tears throughout the competition with his mesmerizing and melodious voice. In fact, judges could not contain their enthusiasm and Mr. Johar himself threw comments such as ‘you sang it BETTER than the original singer’. Ben, a bilingual Hindi/English speaker, garnered astonishment from Actress Vidya Balan at his fluency and also his impeccable cultured mannerisms. Ben also impressed the likes of Shah Rukh Khan. Even though Ben was eliminated from the show in the top 10, he emerged a winner in the hearts of millions of fans across the globe. Ben’s hard-earned success became possible through the love, support and guidance of his parents and Gurujis Kinnar Seen and Payal Seen. Ben’s parents, Kumar and Savi Parag were born in Berbice, Guyana but both migrated to the United States of America in 1989. The Parag’s gave birth to three talented children whom they raised to be involved in community and cultural activities. Ashley, Bobby and Ben, fondly called Benny, were encouraged to attended Mandir regularly and it is with that upbringing that all three of their children developed a love for music. After the return from the show, Ben continues to headline his own shows in the United States, Guyana and for the first time, in Canada. This coming July, Ben teams up with Thandavam Culture and Arts Inc. (T.CA), a non-profit organisation founded by Sunanda Dhanna, to perform live at the Rose Theatre, Brampton. The show promises a cultural extravaganza with a classy flair and patrons can expect a great line-up of songs and dances primarily by members of the IndoCaribbean community. |
