Softball cricket on the cusp
of another season
Brampton Gladiators get ready
Gladiators Captain Shaun Roberts
By Lekhraj Nimraj
Softball cricket season is about to start across the GTA and Brampton Gladiators SC preparations are in full swing. The team management has been hard at work over the past few months securing sponsorship and acquiring new talent. At the last AGM held in March 2017, a new team captain, Shaun Roberts, was voted in with Ravi Bhim as Vice Captain. Roberts had a very successful 2016 year and is hoping for a repeat in 2017.
In an invited comment Roberts explained, “I am very excited to have been selected as captain for the 2017 season. My passion for the game is what drives me and I want to contribute to the success of Gladiators. We had an extremely successful latter part of the 2016 season and I want us to continue in that vein for 2017. I am incredibly impressed with the guys we have on board and I know we are going to go out there giving 200%. With Ravi (vice-captain) at my side, I know that the team will bring home glory.”
Roberts involvement in the game has taken on more importance as he is now on the Ontario Round Arm Softball Cricket Association (ORSCA) board as the treasurer for 2017-18. He is also a member of the executive board of Brampton Gladiators.
Club Manager Michael Mohan
Club Manager Michael Mohan has also echoed the captain’s praise and enthusiasm. He was instrumental in securing new talent and indicated that he is very pleased with the team on paper. “Last year we started off well in practice and then things got a bit sour. It is only in the last stages we found our grove and started winning. We need to continue to build on those successes. I am pleased to see the talent we have now and look forward to the team stepping up their game,” he explained.
Gladiators have been hard at indoor practice over the last few weeks and will be playing their first regular season match against Fuzion Sports Club on May 8 at Marvin Heights Public school, 7455 Redstone Rd, Mississauga.
The team plays in the ORSCA league. ORSCA has emerged to be the largest in Canada over the recent years and prides itself on being the only league that practices the true art of round arm (bowling) softball cricket. This year, 24 teams will be competing in 2 zones in three competitions (regular season-t20, t20 “test” and t-10).
