Last Saturday, the Jamaican Canadian Association of Nurses (JCAN) presented Guyana-born Yvonne Ramlall, RPN with its 2017 Leadership Award of Distinction. The award is given to a nurse that has "demonstrated professional achievements, exemplary leadership and excellence in nursing." Those familiar with Yvonne will unanimously concur on her credentials that make her the ideal candidate for this recognition. She is not only eminently qualified from a theoretical and academic standpoint as a health practitioner but also possesses the mental and emotional makeup that uniquely positions her as a caregiver of the highest order. She is a very feeling person with an analytical mind who pays attention to minute details, all of which go towards helping her relate to those under her care. For the past 16 years, Yvonne has been a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) at the Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre (HC)/Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Presently she is preceptor to new student RPNs and a mentor/resource nurse to new graduates. Her career in the healthcare field began in 1972 when she joined the Gamma North Peel Laboratory as an ECG/Phlebotomy Technician. She moved up the ranks through studious and diligent application to improve her knowledge and skills in her chosen career. Over the years she has consistently added diplomas and certificates to her portfolio and attended conferences and seminars which all contribute to providing her a sound base and a wide grasp of her discipline. Yvonne has received countless awards in the field of nursing and other health related areas, in leadership and education pertaining to her specialties. Yvonne has made several oral and poster presentations to healthcare professionals both across Canada (Ontario, Quebec, Alberta) and abroad (Dubai, South Africa, Australia, Malta, England, Ireland). She has done studies in Post-Operative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV) and Pain Experience of Patients whose Primary Language is not English both of which have been published. RPNAO Newsletter carried Yvonne's nursing profile while her 2007 LCPF study was published in the International Journal of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing, UK. She is a member of the College of Nurse of Ontario and the RPNAO. The JCAN has selected a most deserving candidate for its 2017 Award of Distinction. |
